Decision fatigue is a real thing.
Contemplation in making a choice can take up precious bandwidth in our brains.
When we are wavering and negotiating on making a decision, we often ask others what they think.With a variety of opinions, the noise can make our next steps fuzzy.
This internal debate can be overwhelming, consuming and even debilitating, especially when we desire to be “rational” in our choice.
I read a quote this morning:
“These are the characteristics of the rational soul:
self-awareness, self-examination and self-determination.
It reaps its own harvest.
… It succeeds in its own purpose.”
- MARCUS AURELIUS
I thought the dissection of this quote could be helpful when trying to figure out which direction to go:
- Inward awareness of your genuine thoughts, feelings and emotions on the options at hand.
- Outward examination of what actions, behaviors or steps would be involved in going in either direction.
- Decide to move forward with an unapologetic determination and pride in your choice, having confidence that your choice aligns with your “rational soul” a.k.a. your authentic self, regardless of what others think/say.
Choices are not always easy, but perhaps, if we take time to tune into rational contemplation, a decision will emerge and organically “reap its own harvest” for success.
